It’s finally here! Critter Kart is now available for purchase on Steam and the Oculus Store! I’ve been working on this game for many years as a hobby and am extremely excited to finally release it to the world. I sincerely hope that you enjoy playing it and maybe invite your friends to play some splitscreen in it too. While today is quite a big day for me and I am proud of the game I am releasing, I also love to tinker with it as a hobby and have more improvements planned for it. While I’m not going to commit to additional content at this time, I won’t rule it out either. In the coming weeks/months ahead there are a few Quality of Life improvements that I’d like to bring to the game, but simply weren’t quite ready for release.

Planned Quality of Life updates:
1. Updates to the in-game graphics settings menu (exciting, I know…)
         - Separate custom settings profiles for VR & desktop modes
         - Removal of graphics settings with little impact on actual in-game graphics
         - Addition of settings for shadow type & resolution (these          - settings can have a significant impact on performance)
         - Enable/Disable post-processing options
         - Enable/Disable planar water reflections
2. Custom input configuration for unknown controller devices
         - Allow players to configure any controller they want and save a configuration file for that controller which can be shared with other players.
3. Updates to the tutorial course & bringing the tutorial to non-VR players as well

Of course, I’ll also be watching community feedback closely, so be sure to let me know what features you’d like or bugs I need to fix. Thanks for all your support!

It's about time!

If you look at the date on this post, you'll notice that some time has gone by since I last posted anything. Fortunately, I have not been idle, and Critter Kart has grown tremendously in that time. Since the last post, The entire game has been rewritten in C# instead of Javascript (or more appropriately, UnityScript). This has led to performance improvements and has allowed me to find a lot of bugs and optimize a lot of tasks simply by going through years of my old code with fresh eyes. Additionally, full native virtual reality support has been added, in addition to a number of changes and improvements big and small to make VR feel as great as possible. Splitscreen, controller support, and VR have all been improved, and the game is now fully supported across Windows, Mac, and Linux. There are far too many bug fixes and changes that were made over the past few years to mention, but hopefully you'll notice the improvements when you play it. The game is much smoother and more polished these days, and as a result, its finally time to release it!

Critter Kart will be available for purchase on the Oculus Store and Steam on September 13th for a price of $4.99. Hopefully you'll be able to enjoy playing it either solo or with friends. It's been quite the journey to get here, and I'd like to thank everyone whose been along for the ride, or is just seeing the game for the first time now.

Thanks :)

Updating all the Things

This update is a collection of many things that have been in the works for some time. Among the more noticeable changes are the introduction of official multi-monitor support across both singleplayer and multiplayer, which allows hosts with multiple monitors to give each player a true fullscreen experience. In addition, the first phase of sound effects has begun its introduction, with many more effects coming very soon. Another major change is the impact of surface on speed, going offroad now comes at a cost, and you will clearly see particles kicked up behind your kart to indicate that you've gone offroad. The environment design, lighting, and terrain of the Coastal Forest map have also been completely reworked for better visuals and performance. In the next few updates, expect improvements to sound and performance, before work begins on the next map.

Enjoy!     :)

Another map has been added to Critter Kart in the form of the coastal Forest. This map includes an epic jump onto a moving fishing boat, which bobs up and down with the waves. In addition to the new map, various tweaks, bugfixes, and more have been introduced to ensure a better experience. If you find any glitches or issues, let me know, and feel free to suggest settings or features for future Critter Kart maps & updates.

Although updates have been sparse over the past few months, progress has steadily continued. This update features a new map, Cactus AFB, set at a desert airbase. In addition, the jungle map has been completely reworked and all maps have seen updates to general lighting. Furthermore, the jungle map has also been optimized to perform better across a variety of systems. Audio has been added to specific effects on various maps as well, and much more is coming in the future. The third Person Camera has also been substantially reworked to allow the player to look around while driving. New characters have been introduced as well, including Coco, Herbie, and Bald Eagle. This update also contains more updates to core gameplay features and bugfixes than I can honestly recall. Enjoy checking out this latest version for yourself!

A New Perspective

The latest update is full of changes. First and foremost is the presence of a new First Person mode, which can be accessed by pressing the [v] key. You can look around and play the game from this new angle as any character, and of course, Arm motions have been added as well to improve the experience. Where would the game be without fluffiness though? Yes, now the creatures are actually fluffy and this can best be seen through the arms in the new first person view. Performance optimizations have also been made to some scripts, so it should go easier on your CPU. Have Fun and let me know if you want any other changes. More is yet to come!

Splitscreen & Characters

TO say the least, a lot has been changed. To begin, SPlitscreen has finally arrived after quite a bit of work, so now you can plug in a controller or two, invite your friend over, and have a blast. Splitscreen allows players to choose their controller of choice, customize their player and pointstreaks, and queue up multiple levels to be played in sequence. So if you actually play this game, and you have friends, then congratulations, this is the update for you! For everyone else, fear not, as there are updates for you too. The new characters Husky and George have joined the fray, allowing you to have up to eight kart racing. Husky is a fluffy sled dog, while George is a (slightly) maniacal teddy bear, bent on taking over the world with physics and lasers. Watch out, and have fun!

Welcome to the Jungle

It's finally Here! Critter Kart's Third Level Takes a journey to a Dense Jungle, filled with Cliffs, Waterfalls, and Wildlife. In addition, Both the Island and Mountain maps have been completely retouched, adding in tremendous amounts of Detail to textures, and introducing more roadside objects and neat little things as eye-Candy for the player. Unfortunately this does take a toll on your framerate. If you are having difficulties, check out the enhanced options menu to better configure your game, or choose a preset to help out your performance. Amongst other things, this update also reworks the entire menu system, which can now be navigated by keyboard as well as mouse. Controller Support for Windows PCs also allows players to play their game from a distance, or simply with their peripheral of choice. Only Xbox 360 controllers have been tested, let be know what works for you if your results differ.

I think that covers most of it, Some changes were probably not mentioned above, but such is life. Please leave feedback here if you have any and be sure to check out the new trailer for Critter Kart on Youtube, linked in the sidebar.

Thanks Again :)

Under the Hood

Many improvements have been made to the general gameplay mechanics and core systems. Weapons have been rebalanced, difficulty levels have greater consequences, kart handling has been improved, AI obstacle avoidance has been rewritten, as have shields, armor, and more. Furthermore, respawning actually works much better! You now have a small period in which you are essentially transparent to others, and will not collide with them, before you fully re-enter the race. Enjoy the latest update, and stay tuned for more!

Amelia, a second super fluffy Dutch bunny, has been added to the game, along with the parrot, Paco. Give these new characters a try in the latest update, featuring all-out mayhem with six karts in each match instead of four. In the future, a slider may be added to number of karts in a race, but for now, enjoy the new characters!
